Bodybuilding is the process of developing muscle fibres through the combination of weight training, increased caloric  intake, and rest. It specifically deals with producing the largest and most well defined muscles possible. Someone who engages in this activity is referred to as a bodybuilder. As a sport (competitive bodybuilding) bodybuilders display their physiques to a panel of judges, who assign points based on their aesthetic appearance. Bodybuilding has contributed to the success of many public figures worldwide. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno are good examples of successful and famous contestants.

Body builders use resistance weight training to increase muscle size. This causes micro-tears to the muscles being trained; this is generally known as micro-trauma. These micro-tears in the muscle contribute to the soreness felt after exercise, called delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). It is the repair to these micro-trauma that result in muscle growth.
